The current design approach for Oxford University Press’s Very Short Introduction series employs a consistent visual style across all titles, which, while cohesive, can make it challenging to reflect the unique character of each individual subject.
The current design approach for Oxford University Press’s Very Short Introduction series employs a consistent visual style across all titles, which, while cohesive, can make it challenging to reflect the unique character of each individual subject.
Target Audience
The books are aimed at readers with limited prior knowledge but growing interest in the topic – such as high school students, university students, or general adult readers. The redesign maintains consistent titles and branding, while varying imagery and colour schemes to reflect content. Comparable titles from other educational publishers serve as competitors.

Solution
Though hypothetical, the project involved several consultations with senior designers at Oxford University Press. It focused on designing three thematically linked book jackets, introductions to Moons, Planets, and the Sun, featuring detailed, hand-drawn illustrations. Embossing and debossing simulated planetary textures, with foil stamping used for the titles to enhance contrast and finish.

Iterations
Following feedback from senior designers at Oxford University Press, who felt the concepts on the left and the middle appeared too fictional, the final cover (right hand side) features a realistic, hand-drawn half-planet. This reflects the academic tone and hints at the vastness of space, leaving room for the audience's imagination.
Final deliverables
Reflection
Through this project, I developed the ability to integrate typography and illustration in a cohesive and visually effective manner. I refined my skills in producing realistic illustrations, visually communicating complex content, and applying specialist print finishes for book covers. Additionally, I gained valuable experience collaborating with senior designers at Oxford University Press.
